Swimming and Surfing

The False Bay coastline is the favoured coast for sports especially swimming, as the water temperature is considerably warmer than on the Atlantic coastline. If you going to be spending any time in the sun don’t forget the sun tan lotion it is prerequisite for a great holiday. Failure to take the necessary precautions will only leave you ill, rather be safe than sorry.

The surfers appear to follow the waves with the wind direction determining the best spots to surf. They say sea temperature is irrelevant once the surfing bug has bitten you!

Should you wish to learn or improve your surfing skills numerous companies are able to assist you with, the most popular spot for lessons being Muizenberg beach.

Life Saving

During the summer months Fish Hoek Beach has lifeguards on duty during the school holidays, weekends and public holidays. If guards are duty the yellow and red flag will be visible.

Fish Hoek beach is home to a very strong life saving club who finished 6th in the last world championship in Italy and are current holders of the South African Club Title.

Children from as young as 8 are involved in this sport and its true, not all lifesavers look like Pamela Anderson and David Hassellhof.

Sailing

The area is well known for a wide range of yachting activities. The beach hosts the Fish Hoek Beach Sailing Club who focus primarily on Hobby Cats launched from the beach. The nearby Simons Town Yacht Club with their ocean going yachts venture regularly into the bay to enjoy the calm waters or as part of their regular races.

Whale Watching

With protection of Whales their numbers visiting our shores have increased significantly over the past decade with the coastline now offering excellent opportunities to watch whales close in shore from July through to November each year.

It is no longer necessary to go to Hermanus to see whales breaching or to watch from a boat.

Boat-based Experiences

For those of us who want to get up close and personal with these magnificent mammals boat based viewing is possible from Simons Town harbour. Numerous launches offer trips to see whales, white shark spotting at seal island or for the slightly more adventurous shark cage diving. The boats also offer a different perspective of Cape Point from the sea and of course the African Penguins of Boulders beach. A boat-based tour of Simon’s town is a great way of experiencing the Naval heritage of the town and provides an opportunity to see the new frigates and submarines recently acquired by the South African Navy.

Fishing

With numerous fishing villages close by the angler is spoilt for choice. If you keen on this sport you must experience the excitement of catching a local delicacy called a Snoek from a small boat with a hand line. These fish are renowned for their aggression and if your fingers in the way consider it “gone”

If you bring your catch back to the Villa we may just help you prepare and cook it on the Braai (Barbque).
